Cambodia 2023: Singapore continues gold rush as swimmers sign off

Team Singapore’s showing on Day 6 of competition at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia included a long-awaited medal, as well as historic first gold. 

The day brought with it nine golds, six silvers and six bronzes, taking the contingent’s tally so far to 36 golds, 29 silvers, 37 bronzes.

Singapore’s Valorant team clinched a historic gold, winning esports’ first title at the SEA Games since the sport was introduced to the biennial event in 2019. 

The team comprising Ayrton “artn” Soh, Yeoh “Divine” Chun Ting, Ingram “FREY” Tan, Marcus “nephh” Tan, Rodman “vera” Yap and Tidus “STYRON” Goh were awarded joint gold alongside Indonesia. 

Before these Games, Singapore had taken two silvers and four bronzes, and had also taken bronze earlier in Cambodia in the Mixed League of Legends: Wild Rift (Mobile) team event. Valorant, a first-person shooter game was added to the esports roster in Cambodia. 

 

A return to major Games and the podium for Soh Rui Yong

Soh Rui Yong has waited six years to return to the national fold. Singapore has waited 40 years for another medal in the men’s 10,000m. 

The distance runner crossed the finish line in 31min 10.70sec at the Morodok Techo National Stadium to take silver, en route to a new national record. 

Soh, a two-time marathon champion at the Games, has never competed in the 10,000m. His time improves on his own previous national mark of 31:12.05. 

Singapore's last medal in the men's 10,000 was in 1983, a bronze from Jagtar Singh. 

Two more bronze medals came through Goh Chui Ling, who clocked 2:09.15 in the women’s 800m, and Calvin Quek, who set a new national record of 50.75sec to finish third in the men’s 400m hurdles. 

 

Cricket wins first medal of Cambodia Games in Men’s T20

Singapore’s men’s team won the sport’s first medal in Cambodia, beating Indonesia in the bronze medal playoff by 15 runs. 

The team will next compete in the T10 event, which starts on May 13. 

 

A first individual SEA Games medal for Max Lee

Diver Max Lee scored 362.80 in the men’s 10m platform event to take the bronze medal. 

It is his first individual medal, and comes after he paired up with Jonathan Chan at the last Games to win silver in the men’s 10m synchronised event.

Singapore's Men's team opened their Games campaign with a 2-2 draw against Indonesia. And on Day 6, the Republic faced powerhouse Malaysia, in their 2nd round-robin group match. But after a valiant fight, it was the Malaysians taking the 4-3 win. The Republic will regroup before facing Cambodia next.

Singapore's Women's Beach Volleyball campaign got underway today, as they took on Cambodia. Cecilia Soh and Alicia Tan (Team 1) and their compatriots Eliza Chong and Phua Zhoarong (Team 2), faced a Cambodian team which was formed less than 2 weeks prior to the Games. And TeamSG went on to claim the match with a 2-0 win, as they'll meet Indonesia next.
