GetActive! Singapore (GASG) is back with an array of initiatives for schools this 2022! The annual event rallies students and educators to celebrate National Day through Sport. Find out what’s available this year here!

Last year, GASG for Schools was an event like none other! Embracing the theme of “Play On, Play Together”, the event provided a series of meaningful initiatives to bond and celebrate the nation’s birthday together through sport, with 128 schools and over 170,000 students and teachers getting active amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mdm Moliah Binte Hashim, Principal of Princess Elizabeth Primary School, decided to engage in the GASG event to provide opportunities for students and staff to “participate in something purposeful together outside of school”.

They participated in all initiatives to connect and get active while celebrating National Day together. The GetActive! Star Challenge encouraged students to stay active through various mini activities, such as using their creativity to make sport equipment from recycled materials. Among the various activities, the GASG Workout was found to be a favourite among students, because who doesn’t love to dance! Students were also able to bond with their classmates through handwritten notes encouraging one another, providing a holistic approach for students to learn more about sport and beyond.

Mr Aaron Chan, Subject Head of PE and CCA, believes that the initiatives have “develop[ed] leadership skills in their student leaders to motivate their peers for an active and healthy lifestyle”.

Princess Elizabeth Primary School also partnered with Eden School, a special education school, to celebrate National Day together virtually. Both schools have a long-standing partnership to promote meaningful and interactive activities that encourage social integration amongst staff and students. As part of the National Day celebrations, students from both schools participated together in the GetActive! with Sports Expertise initiative, where they had an enjoyable time doing the workout and staying active together. Even the school’s teaching and non-teaching staff joined in on the fun and learned to keep active alongside the students.

Principal Mdm Moliah hopes that all schools will participate in future GetActive! Singapore event as it provides an “inclusive platform to promote an active sporting and healthy lifestyle for all Singaporeans, including children”.

And as simply put by 8-year-old Gan Xing Xuan, student of Princess Elizabeth Primary School, “You just need a little bit of your time every day to exercise!”
