GetActive! Singapore (GASG) returned to its full in-person physical format, following the official launch on Saturday 30 July at the OCBC Square (next to Kallang Wave Mall). After the last 2 online virtual editions of GASG in 2020-21, it was extremely exciting to see thousands of Singaporeans, in attendance for the launch event, which also coincided with the annual Olympic Day Walk celebrations.

Mr Edwin Tong (Minister for Culture, Community & Youth) was the Guest-of-Honour for the GASG Launch. And he had a “Rock Star’s Welcome”, as several enthusiastic Singaporeans were keen to get a selfie, shook his hand or exchanged high-fives, while making his way through a crowd of more than 2,400 in attendance. For many, it was probably their 1st time meeting a Minister in person. From the young at heart to the seniors, Minister Tong’s rousing reception from the public is testament to his initial proclamation that Sport is Back!
As part of the Launch programme, the Republic’s national anthem Majulah Singapura was sung with gusto and passion. Everyone stood together as one voice in unison, singing the anthem and the recital of the national pledge. The crowd in attendance included hundreds of students from various schools, including West Spring Secondary and Cedar Girls’ Secondary. Most of the students came decked in their new red/white coloured Olympic Day Walk T-shirts, to keep in sync with the overall theme of the day.

Before the start of the Olympic Day Walk, it was time for everyone to loosen up their muscles and stretch. And what better way, then to get everyone into the spirit of National Day, by involving the crowd in the GetActive! Workout : Dance of the Nation! (DOTN)

Following the energetic 2022 edition of DOTN, it was finally time to embark on the 3km Olympic Day Walk. Minister Tong headed to the starting point. He took a few moments to walk up to the crowd assembled at the start line and snapped a few photos on his mobile phone. The MCCY Minister then proceeded to the podium and waved the large flag, signalling the 1st wave of participants to begin their journey around the Singapore Sports Hub.

With the sun shining in its full glory, there were plenty of smiles, laughter, playful banter etc as Singaporeans appeared to be having an enjoyable time. And along the Walk, many stopped to meet Minister Tong, who obliged several requests for photos.

The journey around the Sports Hub took around 30 minutes at a leisurely stroll. And upon their return to the OCBC Square, many chose to take a brief rest before engaging themselves in the various booths and fun activities. Check out the brief highlights video below :)
