Singapore’s Paralympic contingent celebrated the start of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games with a dazzling Opening Ceremony in the heart of the French capital on 28 August. Led by flagbearer and swimmer Toh Wei Soong, Team Singapore was one of the 168 delegations that marched out from the bottom of the iconic Champs-Élysées to the Place de la Concorde. The setting sun contributed a stunning backdrop for the Parade of Athletes, with the contingents all smiles as they basked in the festive atmosphere.

At the Place de la Concorde, which was transformed into an open-air stadium, masterful performances over five artistic segments paid tribute to the strength and creativity of people with disabilities. Strong themes highlighting the challenges and prejudices faced by those with disabilities also invited the audience to consider their role in building a more inclusive society.

France is hosting the Summer Paralympic Games for the first time, and a total of 4,400 athletes are expected to compete at these Games. Singapore will be represented by 10 athletes in six sports – para archery, para athletics, boccia, para equestrian, para swimming and shooting para sport.

Team Singapore Chef de Mission Ng Wee Chew said: “Through their grit, dedication, and resilience, our 10 athletes have done so well to qualify for the Games and to be here healthy and ready to go. I hope they will be pleased with their performances and achieve their goals, be it a personal best or a medal – accomplish a breakthrough performance.

“Being here to compete at the Games is an achievement itself, and I hope they will look back with pride, build for the future, and be an inspiration to others to follow.”

The action kicks off on 29 August with five-gold Paralympic swimming champion Yip Pin Xiu defending her women's 100m backstroke S2 title at the Paris La Defense Arena. Para archer Nur Syahidah Alim opens her campaign on the same day in the ranking round of the women’s Individual Compound Open, while debutante Jeralyn Tan will compete in the preliminary round of the boccia event.
