The Rise of Pickleball in Singapore

Pickleball, a dynamic sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, is where players hit a perforated, hollow plastic ball with paddles over a lowered net. Enjoyed both indoors and outdoors, pickleball dates back to the 1960s, where two Americans invented the game to entertain their families. It’s even popularly known to be named after one of the family’s pet dogs, Pickles!

The sport has been steadily gaining popularity in Singapore. Unlike the steep learning curves of other racquet sports, pickleball’s easy-to-learn rules, social nature and accessibility to players of all ages has made it a hit among Singaporeans looking for a fun and inclusive way to stay active.

A Passion for the Sport: Jem

One individual who has been at the forefront of the fast-growing sport is Jem, founder of Performance Pickleball, a community dedicated to the sport. His journey began in November last year, when he chanced upon it while searching for an easy physical activity for his parents. “My mom and my fiancée’s mom hadn’t been active in sports for over 20 years.”

He explains, “Pickleball presented itself as an easy entry into sport – something that can be tailored for older adults or even children. It was a way to get our parents back into exercising.”

What started as a way to engage his parents, quickly turned into a passion. After just two weeks of picking up the paddle, he had traveled to China to compete, and returned with a few medals. Now, he has traveled to Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam for competitions, and even set up his own academy and facility.

“Honestly, the most challenging aspect is to probably not play too much!”.

Jem’s story highlights the growing appeal of pickleball in Singapore, as more discover the joy and benefits of the sport.

The Perks of Pickleball

One of the draws of pickleball is its suitability and accessibility for all ages and skill levels. The low-risk sport is known to improve heart health, strengthen muscles and increase flexibility, all while still being gentle on the joints. This makes it an ideal option for seniors, who are looking to stay active without risking injury.

Often played in doubles, pickleball’s social nature is also another draw for players in Singapore. It’s dynamic and social gameplay allows for easy interactions, and fosters inclusivity across anyone from all walks of life. As a sport that can be played on almost any court, like a badminton court or just a quarter of a tennis court, this makes it even easier for anyone to pick up the sport effortlessly.

Beyond physical and social aspects, pickleball is also beneficial for overall well-being. The game requires quick thinking, fast reactions and hand-eye coordination, keeping players present in the moment and mental engagement high, which can also help to relieve stress and improve moods.

Pickleball’s array of benefits align perfectly with Sport Singapore (SportSG)’s goal of promoting health and well-being through sport, with more support being implemented for the emerging sport.
