If you’re trying rock climbing for the first time, here are some tips to help you get started!
Before you begin tackling the climb, it’s important to start off with some warm-up exercises to prepare your body. Doing so can help to prevent injuries or overheating of your body. Examples of exercises include slow jogs or some simple stretches.
Though you may occasionally need to move away from the wall to check your route, you may want to keep your body as close to the wall as possible for the majority of the climb. This allows you to better maintain your centre of gravity and makes the climb easier and more efficient.
You can do this by keeping either side of your hip close to the wall at all times and ensuring that your knees are not pointed towards the wall.
There is a wide range of climbing techniques and styles – each requires different levels of strength and balancing ability, and has an effect on your speed of climbing.
For example, some styles are more dynamic than others and require more strength. Hence, it’s crucial to move fast. Conversely, others that are more static in nature require slow and deliberate movements to prevent you from falling.
As each individual is unique, it’s important to find a technique and style that best suits your abilities.
As you’re climbing, make an effort to find suitable resting spots along the way where you can take a breather and shake out your tired muscles. This can make your climbing experience a more efficient one!
As a climber, it’s essential to get used to falling, and this is especially so for a beginner. You may fall when a foot is in the wrong place, when you lose your grip or when you’re unable to maintain your balance.
For rock climbing, if you feel like you’re about to fall, push away from the wall and place your body weight on the rope and harness. Make sure to land on your feet too (especially for bouldering)!
If you have a fear of falling, a good way to overcome this fear is to practice falling.
Rock (or rope) climbing involves the use of a rope, harness and other gear to scale a tall wall. Bouldering, which is a form of rock climbing, doesn’t involve any equipment, though climbing shoes and chalk are used to create a more secure grip and foothold.
As ropes and harnesses aren’t used for bouldering, the walls are often shorter (less than 6.1m) than rock climbing walls. Mats are also placed on the floor to cushion falls.
There are numerous rock climbing gyms in Singapore that are suitable for beginners such as:
If you’re looking to bring your child to a rock climbing gym, here are some kid-friendly places you can try:
The price of rock climbing in Singapore varies depending on your age group and the number of sessions you’re signing up for.
